OU Club of Houston Announce 2010 Scholarship Award Recipients |
The OU Club of Houston has awarded four-year scholarships to two outstanding Houston-area high school graduates. Danielle San Miguel, a 2010 graduate of Klein Oak High School received the Robert Simmer Memorial Scholarship, and Carter Tesh, a 2010 graduate of Katy Seven Lakes High School received the OU Club of Houston Scholarship.
Danielle San Miguel, Klein Oak High School, Spring, Texas
Danielle, the daughter of Mark and Carla San Miguel, graduated from Spring’s Klein Oak High School where she earned a 4.9 grade point average (based on a 4.0+ grading scale) and ranked 32 in her class of 799.
While attending Klein Oak High School, Danielle was a Group Commander for the Air Force Junior ROTC where she led 151 cadets. She received numerous awards for her outstanding service with AFJROTC programs, including the American Veteran’s Award, Air Force Association Award, California State Senate Award, and the President George W. Bush Gold Award.
Danielle was also a member of the National Honor Society, president of the German Club and volunteered for several community organizations including Habitat for Humanity, Adopt-A-Beach, Muscular Dystrophy Association and the AAR Animal Shelter.
At the University of Oklahoma, Danielle intends to study biological anthropology. “As a biological anthropologist, I hope to have the opportunity to study abroad in the Mediterranean region, mostly Italy and Egypt, two richly cultural areas of the world, to help answer the questions: Where do we come from and why are we so different?”
The Simmer Memorial Scholarship, awarded through the OU Club of Houston, is named in the memory of Robert W. Simmer, a graduate of the OU Law School and devoted supporter of the University of Oklahoma.
Carter Tesh, Seven Lakes High School, Katy, Texas
Carter, son of Bob and Kathy Tesh, graduated from Seven Lakes High School in Katy with a 3.82 grade point average (based on a 4.0 grading scale), and ranked 211 in his class of 623.
During high school, Carter earned an Eagle Scout rank in the Boy Scouts where he served as a Senior Patrol Leader and on the Patrol Leadership Committee guiding his fellow scouts on campouts as well as helping plan meetings and activities. He was involved with scouting for seven years, volunteering more than 100 hours with community service and volunteer projects.
Two of Carter’s many creative passions are band and theater. He played in the marching band, where he learned to play the tuba, trombone and trumpet, and helped advance the Seven Lakes High School marching band to the 4A State Marching Finals. In theater, he performed in numerous school productions such as Winnie the Pooh, Harvey and Bye, Bye Birdie, directed scenes from Atonement and served on various production technical crews.
In his spare time, Carter interned at a Houston advertising agency where he gained valuable experience for his college major, taught swimming lessons, served as a life guard and worked as a retail sales associate.
“I took a tour of the University of Oklahoma and was very impressed with the business school. OU has a great marketing department and has many opportunities to study abroad that are very exciting to me. The campus is beautiful and I feel right at home!”
At the University of Oklahoma, Carter plans to study advertising and marketing and then attend graduate school for business. After graduation, his goal is to work in the marketing department of a major sports or entertainment company.
